MORE INFORMATION ON BABU

Babu is a gorgeous large sized fuzzy white pod who arrived at the Hope For Podencos shelter in early 2020 as a young puppy. He was adopted in August 2020 and has been in a home for 5.5 years, but we are in agreement with his current owners that despite them working with trainers and behaviourists over the years, that their busy home environment that has regular young children visiting is not the environment he needs in order to thrive.

Babu is an affectionate and calm dog who loves nothing more than a head and ear massage and at times really actively seeks out a fuss from people. He has so many amazing qualities. He is incredibly well loved by his current adopters who have found this decision very difficult but know it is right for Babu. As mentioned, they have worked extensively with Babu and as such he knows various commands for certain situations which we will of course share with any future adopter. He is crate trained and really recognises his crate as his safe space and can be shut in there if needed. He isn’t destructive in the home, travels well in the back seat of the car but isn’t so good in the boot and will happily settle during the day at home.

At the heart of Babu’s challenges is a level of anxiety that means he is craving stability and routine and a quiet, calm life to match his calm personality. His current owners have already done a huge amount of work with him and he now walks much more calmly and confidently on lead, only really reacting to loud tractors despite having previously reacted to other dogs, cars, bikes, lorries etc. We know he responds really well to training and we are looking for a family who can continue working on this. Praise is his reward during any training rather than treats as he can become overstimulated around food. His current home have grandchildren that visit regularly and this puts Babu on edge and means he is trigger stacked in the home. He has a history of resource guarding anything edible which has also vastly improved with training but when he is on edge and overwhelmed, those old behaviours can start to creep in again and this is a risk with small children around. We are looking for a home free of children in a calm area with a garden and access to rural walks. Babu could continue to live as an only dog, or could live with a well balanced, calm female dog as he is already used to sharing his space with a female dog that is part of the extended family. Ideally, Babu would live in calm a home with a relatively set and predictable routine - he will reward you with love and affection and of course that wonderful podenco character!

Babu will be adopted with ongoing support and guidance from ourselves and our trainer, and we can also enlist the help of a behaviourist if needed.

Babu is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. He is passported and available for adoption now..
