Podenco Canario

The Podenco Canario, or Canary Islands Hound comes in a more consistent look and size, they are medium to large and lean with slender limbs, a long muzzle and large pointy ears. They are used for hunting and while relatively known in Gran Canaria (for over 500 years!), they are not so recognised in the mainland of Spain.

The Podenco Canario comes in the one coat type - Short Haired (although this can be rough and smooth)

They also come in one size range:

Large - 20 to 25 inches // 50 to 64cm // 22-33kg

The Podenco Canario colour varieties are - Brown, Chocolate, Black and White

They are often confused with Ibizan or Pharaoh Hounds.

As with all Podencos, they are full of character. Very smart and a little wilful, happy with people and other animals (when introduced responsibly), very affectionate and extremely loyal with their owners.

The need daily walking and enjoy a good run in a safe field, they are incredibly speedy!

Their life span is 10-13 years.

Below are the Podenco Canario that are currently at the Hope For Podencos Centre
