Romeo's story began when he appeared at an English couple's home in the countryside near Urcal. He was frightened of being touched, but hungry enough to keep returning. The couple fed him for several days and each time he would eat and then run away, returning again when he needed food.

Eventually Romeo had to be caught using a specialist catcher so that he could be brought to safety. It was understandably a stressful experience for him, but leaving him to fend for himself wasn't an option. He had no microchip and the marks around his neck suggested that at some point in his past he may have been kept tied or chained.

Thankfully, the Romeo we see today has already come a long way from that frightened dog. He now lives indoors in foster in Spain alongside Podencos of different sizes, ages and personalities, giving him valuable experience of both home life and living as part of a multi-dog household.

Romeo gets on with other dogs, although he can sometimes be a little assertive within the group and isn't an especially playful dog yet although sometimes this can take time. He does enjoy the occasional game of tug with his fosterer and the other dogs, and his fosterer feels he could also be perfectly happy living as an only dog or with other well balanced canine companions.

Unsurprisingly given his beginnings, Romeo loves his food and isn't above helping himself to somebody else's given the opportunity! His new family will need to manage mealtimes appropriately if he were to go to a home with other dogs.

Romeo enjoys his walks and does well on the lead. He doesn’t like any pressure on his collar, so where we recommend 2 points of contact (normally one on the collar and one on the harness), for Romeo these would both need to be clipped to his harness. His fosterer has seen some hunting instinct, although only at a relatively low level so far.

Considering Romeo once wouldn't allow a person to touch him, seeing him living indoors, playing tug and learning to trust is a huge transformation. His past means there may still be things he finds worrying, and his adopters will need to give him time and patience as he adjusts to another big change. In return, they'll get to watch this lovely boy continue discovering just how good life can be.

Romeo is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases excluding Babesia - as already stated he has tested positive and is receiving treatment for this, so we can retest for the all clear. He is passported and available for adoption now.
