MÁS INFORMACIÓN SOBRE SAMMY

Sammy was rescued by the wonderful Mastines En La Calle, where he received treatment for a leg break that he arrived with. The bone was pinned and has fully healed. Sadly after his move to foster in the UK, in a freak accident he broke the same leg in another place. The vets have confirmed they don’t believe the 2 breaks are connected in any way, he’s just been really unlucky. He’s made a full recovery but would not be suitable for those looking to hike or partake in dog sports.

Sammy is a big character dog with big behaviours - when he is excited and happy he shows it with every bone in his body trying to wag, but when he’s is anxious this too is amplified. He gets on well with all humans and shows no preference towards males or females, but his space needs to be respected. He can be easily startled due to his deafness so interactions need to be instigated by Sammy. We would love to encourage Sammy to use his sense of smell as well as his sight, to help him read his environment and daily experiences better so scent training would be a great bonding activity for Sammy and any potential adopter.

Routine is a really important daily structure for Sammy, where he relies on his sight for everything at present he can be overwhelmed easily so keeping his world small early on is really important. Allowing him to learn and understand as his world grows bigger will really help him to settle into his new home. He needs a home in a rural area with a garden so for the first 4-6 weeks minimum he can just explore his space in the settling period. Then short, quiet walks can start with minimal additional stimulation as he adjusts and starts to work back to life as a pet - please note Sammy will always need to be on a lead unless in a secure hired field.

We are looking for a home with no children, no cats and no other dogs. While Sammy has lived with all of these in the past he needs a very managed lifestyle and we dont think thats fair to other people or animals in the home. If he gets overstimulated he can become boisterous, if he gets startled he can become anxious. All this can be avoided with a nice, calm, predictable home with one owner looking to give their time to him. For experienced rescue or dog owners we are willing to talk through ways to manage if you do have another dog, but we would need to feel very comfortable the other dog would not be impacted by Sammy joining the home.

The key to life with Sammy is the bond he can form with his human(s), as he has been in specialist kennels since September working through rehabilitation for both pain management and behaviour challenges meet and greets are a must and can be facilitated in the UK. We would expect 3 meets minimum so we can be sure both Sammy and adopter are reading and learning each other well and have the start of trust and understanding for each other.

We know we are asking a lot and Sammy is not a straightforward chap, but he is a wonderful dog and will be incredibly rewarding for the right home. We want to find him that home. Both the HFP team and the specialist behaviourist working with him will provide ongoing support for the duration of his life.

Sammy is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. He is currently on medication for his ongoing pain trial and anxiety - which HFP would cover all costs for. He is passported and available for adoption now.
